The natural outdoor environment is one of the keys to the success of EAQ’s programmes.
Learners are not expected to learn within one room or building or by using a limited number of their senses. They have the space to explore nature, use their skills, problem-solve and make decisions and have a truly multi-sensory experience.
It can unlock a lifelong love of learning as well as an interest in nature.
One parent, whose two sons attend one of EAQ’s outdoor learning spaces, said “Both of my boys have complex needs and the centre provides a safe place where they can be themselves and get tailored, individual support. It is so lovely to see them grow in confidence and thrive in an environment that is so suited to them. The centre has been the only place they have been able to access and really helps with their emotional wellbeing, physical wellbeing and this has always been our top priority for them, as they have faced so many challenges. They learn in a non demanding environment where they feel safe and happy.”
Intrinsic Motivation
Rather than relying on extrinsic rewards and punishments to motivate learners our methods encourage the learner’s intrinsic motivation. This means that they are engaged with the subject area for its own sake, not to pass an exam or gain a certificate.
Research shows that when learners engage because they find an activity interesting, that they become more likely to attach meaning to their efforts. explore new topics and, perhaps more importantly, be willing to persist when they come across challenges.
Social and Emotional Needs
The learner’s social and emotional needs are wrapped up with their ability to learn effectively. In America, the National Centre for Safe Supportive Learning Environments states “Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is fundamental not only to children’s social and emotional development but also to their physical and emotional health, ethical development, citizenship, motivation to achieve, and academic learning as well.”
Learner confidence develops more quickly when we start from a place where the learner feels emotionally safe and progress at the learner’s own pace.
